CHAPTERS 43 – 48

This week the format has been changed a bit.  Hang on!  Read chapters 43 – 45 and remember what you read in chapter 42 or go back and read it as well.

The brothers have to go back to Jacob/Israel and explain that Joseph is alive.  Remember, Benjamin probably does not know about the secret. They are probably having this discussion in secret…, again.

Scenario – You are one of the brothers.  The brothers decide to make up a plausible story, of how they found his tunic covered with blood, and yet Joseph is alive.

Is your thought – no big deal, I have been hiding secrets for years?

Scenario – You are one of the brothers.  You tell them you are going to go along with their story, but in your head, you decide to finally reveal your secret, to your father.

When contemplating how to tell your father, would you start by reminding your father of some of the stories you have heard through the years, of his interactions with Laban?

Would you tell him, only of the role, you played in the deception?

Would you tell him the full truth, regardless of the consequences?

Now, imagine you are Jacob/Israel.  What would your initial reaction/emotion be, concerning the deception/secret?

Chapter 44

Like Joseph, have you been so overwhelmed with long term emotion, that you could not control it?

Joseph deceived his brothers in chapter 44.  What do you imagine the motive was?

Do you think Joseph would have made Benjamin a slave? Why or why not?

Judah demonstrates the same character trait in this chapter, as he did when the brothers were going to kill Joseph. What word, would you use to describe it?

What long term character have you seen in one of your relatives?

Chapter 45

Joseph knew who God was in his life.  Are you as convinced of who God is in your life?

Looking back into your life, was there a time where God had to convince you, of His presence?

In your own words and thoughts, connect 45:15 to 45:24.

Chapter 46

In 46:2 God talks to Israel, then addresses him as Jacob.  Your thoughts?

What would be, some of your concerns, about moving to a new country, at your current age?

46:34 – What is loathsome, disgusting, or an abomination to you?  Would you do anything, in your power, to keep it from touching your life?

Chapter 47

We do not know how Jacob blessed Pharaoh.  How would you bless someone, you have met for the first time?

God insured Israel got the best of the land.  What has God given you, that you would define as, the best of the land?

Chapter 48

Do you believe that Jacob had the right to claim Joseph’s sons as his? Why or why not?

1st Peter 3:17-18 – Is this applicable to the story of Joseph?  Why or why not?

Why do you think Joseph’s dreams, angered his brothers?

What do you think was behind the desire to kill Joseph?

We don’t know the conversation Joseph was having with his brothers, when they were throwing him in the pit.  What conversation would you be having?

How do you view Reuben different than his brothers?

Ishmaelites are mentioned in this chapter.  Who is Ishmael and who did God say he would be? (Genesis 16:12)

Have you experienced a double standard between you and men in general?  Did it or does it change God’s plan for your life?

In your life, when has God brought something good out of a bad situation?

In verse 6, how would you define “evil in the sight of God”?

Was Judah honest with Tamar in verse 11 and 14?

What are your thoughts concerning Tamar in verses 14-19?

CHAPTER 39

How would Romans 8:28-29 fit Joseph just now?

How do these verses fit in your life just now?

Have you seen where someone was blessed because of another person? (verse 5)

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – Joseph’s sin would have been against God, not Potiphar or his wife. Psalm 51:3-4, Psalms 41:4, 2nd Samuel 12:13

39:14-18 – In your own words, what was the evil? Put a name to it.

Considering verses 21 – 23, was Joseph’s life free of trouble?  Why or why not?

CHAPTER 40

Where in your life are you feeling imprisoned?

What is the conversation you are having with God for your release?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH- Interpretations belong to God (verse 8)  1st Corinthians 12:10, 2nd Peter 1:20-21

Have you made a decision, based on something you saw in someone else’s life?  Did it go well for you?

CHAPTER 41

Would you rather have a glimpse of the future or have a journey to the past? Why?

Have you ever felt God had forgotten about you? _____ What did He do, to let you know He was still there?

It was 2 years before the cupbearer mentions Joseph to Pharoah.  Given the same situation would you get discouraged?

Do you give God credit – always, sometimes, seldom or never? (verse 16)

Did Joseph have wisdom on his own? Why or why not?

Have you asked God for wisdom in an area or in areas of your life?

Read the following verses – 1st Corinthians 1:30, 1st Corinthians 2:5 and 7, Ephesians 1:8 and 17, Colossians 1:28, Colossians 2:3, Colossians 3:16.  Ask God to help you use wisdom more often in your life.

In your own words, personalize and rewrite Colossians 3:16.

FUN STUFF – If you could choose what your name means, what would it be? (41:50)

CHAPTER 42

If you were “Queen for The Day”, what would you have the commoners do?

What past trouble, would you like God to help you forget?

Define Repentance?

Should repentance be judged (discerned) on its intention? Its emotion? Or its results?

When someone has deeply wronged you, are you most likely to seek revenge or reconciliation?  Be honest with God about this question.

Do you or have you had, what seems like a hopeless situation?

Simeon was left in jail when his brothers went back to their father.  Do you think he was treated poorly based on the emotion Joseph had?

FROM THE PASTOR – What Character(s) of God did you see? How have you seen this/these in your life or in the life of someone close to you?

CHAPTERS 31-36

CHAPTER 31

If you could advise Jacob, what would you tell him to do about relationship to Laban?  Remember, only use an absolute truth as discernment, not as a religious judgement.

The Deception Continues !!!!

God told Jacob to leave.  Was he obligated to tell Laban he was leaving?  Why or why not?

What did Rachel do, to show she had become like her father?

Do you think Rachel and Leah would have agreed to leave if their father was still rich?  Why or why not? (Verses 14-16)

In this chapter, how is God, “the God who sees”?  Write the verse(s) you used.

What is your definition of the word “VOW”?

Do you think God caused Jacob to prosper because of the vow? Explain your thinking, there is no concrete answer.

Based on Genesis 28:22, how much of Jacob’s wealth was not touchable by Laban?

CHAPTER 32

What was one meeting or encounter you dreaded?  Why did you dread it?  Did you do everything you could to avoid it?  Do you still have a negative bias or attitude towards the situation?  As you can see, you need to dig deep.

In verse 7, what is the unfounded belief found in Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob?

In a nutshell what was Jacob’s prayer to God in verses 9 – 12?

Do you believe you can wrestle with God for a blessing?  Why or why not?

CHAPTER 33

What dreaded family reunion or get together turned out much better than expected?

When is it easier, for you, to forgive others?

When is it easier, to feel forgiven?

In verse 32:7 & 13, why did Jacob send gifts to Esau?

In verse 33:10-11, What did Jacob say was his reason?

Compare 32:7 & 13 and 33:10-11 – what conclusion do you have?

Let’s remember that an alter is built to or for God.  There are several reasons Jacob could have decided to build an altar to God.  After reading these few chapters, what are some of those reasons.

CHAPTER 34

The deceptions continue!!!

What or who is your family’s pride and joy?

What was or is one unbearable loss you had or dread?

Define anger in verse 7 and deceit in verse 11 according to what happened in this chapter.

What was the truth which was spoken in verses 13 – 18?

How did Hamor and Shechem convince the men to be circumcised according to verse 23?

In your selfishness have you ever convinced someone to do something?

Matthew 5:44 Jesus tells you what your responsibility is concerning enemies.  Write a conversation to God, thanking him for the peace He can and does give you, when you obey this?

This chapter could have a lot of emotion attached to it for you.  Write a conversation to God about your thoughts.  Ask Him to give you what you need to have peace either in your “good for them” or “how could he” emotion.  This could be a secret place for you, which you have never allowed to come to the surface.   If so, it is destructive for you to keep it in the secret place.

CHAPTER 35

In your life, when have you lingered at Shechem (a place to prosper and be religious) instead of going to Bethel ( your designated “house of God”)?

What is your Bethel?  Write it down.  Give it a name.  Have a conversation with God about it.  This is important to your spiritual health.

It appears Jacob knew there were people with him who had foreign gods.  Do you think it was Jacob’s responsibility to rid them before now?  Why or why not?

Why do you think Jacob hid the gods and jewelry instead of destroying them?

We do not see Jacob fearing the people of Canaan.  Why do you think he did not fear?

El Bethel – The God, of the house of God. The God! Of the House of God!  How do these two different expressions take on meaning in your life? (Verse7)

Reuben in essence slept with a step mother.  Yet there is no mention other than Israel (Jacob) heard about it.  Any thoughts on the lack of any conversations or outcome?

Write the names of the son’s of Jacob (Israel) in your notebook.  Write them in a way you can add to them.  For example:

Reuben –  first born, slept with fathers concubine, etc….

Simeon – Leah’s son, defended Dinah his sister, etc..

Levi – Leah’s son, defended Dinah, etc…

So on and so forth.  These men make up the whole of Israel.  They are important.  But it is important to remember their lives as people like us.

CHAPTER 36

In your family, how far back have you gone?

It was important to God to have Esau’s generations mentioned. Why do you think God did this, in light of Jacob getting the blessing, and not Esau?

What are your thoughts concerning the use of the chief throughout this genealogy?

CHAPTERS 25-30

CHAPTER 25

It appears Isaac and Ishmael were on speaking terms. Have you been in a situation where you had to cooperate with a family member who was difficult?

FUN STUFF – What was the worst trade or swap you have made?

DIG DEEP – Did you read where Abraham ever prayed that Sarah would get pregnant?

In this passage, (be truthful with yourself) How are you similar to Esau?

How are you like Jacob?

In your own words what does the word Despised mean – verse 34.

What is a birthright?

What does it mean to despise the birthright?

CHAPTER 26

What is the first thing you thought when you read verse 7?

Compare 25:11 with 12-14 in this chapter. Write your thoughts.

In verse 24 God tells Isaac why he was going to be blessed. Do you want to be blessed because of you or are you okay being blessed because of someone else?

Write a prayer of thanksgiving in detail with one of the blessings you have received.

FUN EXERCISE – this will give insight into who you are. Again, be truthful with yourself.

1) What do you do when there is a Jacob (scheming to take what is yours) in your life?

2) When God blesses people in whom I don’t approve I _________________________________________

3) When there is a competition and/or conflict in my family, I ______

4) I have tried to encourage healing in my family by _________________

CHAPTER 27

Think back to Eve, who and how did she manipulate?

Who and how did Sarai manipulate?

Who and how did Rebekah manipulate?

How have you manipulated someone? Be truthful, you have. Even if it was where you wanted to go to dinner.

When Jacob lied to Isaac, do you think it was for himself, for his mother, or both? Why do you think this?

Remember and mark verses 39 and 40. In the following chapters you will see this fulfilled.

Have you ever been in a place where life was not worth living? How did you process it, to get through it?

If this did not apply to you; have you had someone close to you who felt this way? What was your role in their pain?

Think of your family. Who makes life difficult for you?

What do you do?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH- Luke 6:27-28

How should you respond to the difficult people in your life?

CHAPTER 28

What spiteful thing have you done?

Did it turn out well?

In light of what we know about Ishmael in Chapter 16:11-12; look back to 27:40 and compare to 28:9. Write your thoughts about where Esau went to get a wife.

This is the first mention of a pillar being built and given a name. A pillar is an outward sign or object of meeting with God. An oath is from an inward pledge or vow. An altar is built to or for God.

If you chose to build a pillar what would be its purpose?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – Romans 6:4

What is our outward sign to God and the world?

CHAPTER 29

In your own words, how are Laban and Jacob alike?

Do you have relatives who have the same traits?

Have you been told you have the same traits as a relative?

In your opinion is it a good trait or a bad trait?

When you want a situation or someone to change, what do you do?

CHAPTER 30

Sarai and Rachel – What are your thoughts?

Who was Sarai and what did she do?

Who was Rachel and what did she do?

When you compete, do you get intense, and want to win at any cost?

The deception continues. Has deception from someone in your life caused pain or made a situation more difficult?

Have you been the deceiver? Be honest with God about it. This is important to your spiritual health.

This is a great story. Humanity at its core. What is the foundational truth about people and their heart? Gen 8:21

Jacob’s actions do nothing to deserve a blessing from God at this point. But what did God tell him in 28:13-15?

Who promised it and was it dependent on Jacob’s actions?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH- Who and what is our promise according to these verses? Romans 3:22, 1st Corinthians 1:30, 2nd Corinthians 5:21

FROM THE PASTOR – What character(s) of God did you see this week in the reading?

APPLICATION – Where have you seen the character(s) to be true in you life? Write an example.

CHAPTERS 19-24

CHAPTER 19

What are your thoughts, after reading about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah?

In your life, have you known what God wanted you to do, and yet you hesitated?

Lot’s wife disobeyed.  Write a prayer of thankfulness, that God did not deal with you in an area of disobedience, like he did with Lot’s wife.

CHAPTER 20

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – What did God do in verse 6?

Is God able to keep you from sinning according to 1st Corinthians 10:13?

Now read at 2nd Peter 1:3. How are the verses in 2nd Peter and 1st Corinthians related?

Have you gotten caught up in a situation, in which you felt you could not escape?

What was it? Examples- gossip or a friends lie.

Have you ever presumed something, that did not prove itself to be truth?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – What did Abraham do in verse 17 in accordance with what God said to Abimelech in verse 7?

What did Jesus say for us to do in Matthew 5:43-45?

CHAPTER 21

What are your thoughts about Sarah and her treatment of Hagar?

Does it appear Abraham had different feeling for Ishmael than Sarah did?  Explain your thoughts.

Think of your own family dynamic.  How are you different from Sarah in your thought process?

How are you the same as Sarah in your thought process?

FUN STUFF – Wouldn’t it be great if God told our husband or boss to do what we said?

What would that be?

Have you ever been to the end of yourself?

Abimelech recognized God was with Abraham.  Does this mean he had trust in God or believed in God?  Why or why not?

Who recognizes God is with you, and yet does not follow/ believe/ or trust God?

We read where Abraham named the place where God was the center of an oath.  Write a prayer asking forgiveness where you failed to give a name, to the place, where God met you. Or write a prayer of praise where God met you, and you gave it a name.

CHAPTER 22

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – God specifically tested Abraham.  This is not the same as we read in John 16:33 and James 1:2.  How are they different?

Do you think Abraham knew this was a test? Why or why not?

In verse 16 we read “…your only son.”  How do you rectify this, knowing he has a son named Ishmael?

CHAPTER 23

Why do you think Abraham was insistent to purchase the land instead of receiving it as a gift?

Have you ever been insistent on buying something that someone is trying to give to you as a gift?

Why were you insistent or what was your attitude in the situation?

CHAPTER 24

In verse 7, we read where Abraham trusted God concerning the land which was given to his descendants.

What have you or what are you trusting God to do?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH- Connect verse 12 to verse 26.  What is the truth which was demonstrated so well for us?

What was the conversation between Abraham’s servant and Laban?

Why do you think this was important?

What is your first thought, when 2 people who are related want to get married?

Chapters 13 – 18

God gave me a verse years ago, which I have to admit, has caused me both peace and unrest. Paraphrased is goes like this, “Janice if in all your ways, you acknowledge Me, I will give you direction,”  Proverbs 3:6 Well…, my way in this Bible study was to not have any foundational truth questions, which usually is interpreted as “pat” answers. God has made it clear that I need to include these types of questions.  How you choose to use these questions in your life, is not for me to determine.  So…., with God’s direction, you will have some foundational truth questions.  I will write “FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH” followed by the question.  I do not want to confuse you with “thinking outside the box” with what is foundational.

For example, Foundational Truth – Does God love you? Write a verse which substantiates your answer. You may not use John 3:16. Dig deeper.

I am asking God to continue to lead me, as my way, gets in the way of HIS WAYS.

CHAPTER 13

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH: Go back to chapter 10.   Which of the sons of Noah was responsible for the Canaanites?  This is important to remember throughout the reading of the Old Testament.

The Canaanites are seen often in the Old Testament.  Are they always friends of Israel? Look at Judges 1:9 for example.

We read that Lot chose to live where people were wicked and sinners or rebels against the Lord.

Have you ever been to a place of wickedness?  What was your purpose in doing this?  How did you respond?

Go to Matthew 10:22 – How has this been true in your life?

CHAPTER 14

Concerning Lot being taken as a prisoner.  Reflect on your life.  When did you make a bad decision and yet God sent someone to your defense?

What were your thoughts in the middle of the turmoil, knowing it was because of a choice you made?

Verse 21 – In your opinion did the kings of Sodom have a right to ask for the men to be returned to him?  Why or why not?

CHAPTER 15

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH: Before Christ came, God counted belief in Him as righteousness.

Does this affect how you think about righteousness?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH: God made a covenant with Abraham.

What covenant has God made with us?  Hint; this is found in the New Testament.

CHAPTER 16

Write your thoughts about Sarai and her maid.

Was it some sort of test for Abram and his faithfulness to her?

Was she hoping it was Abraham’s fault for not having a child?

Was she testing Hagar?

Any other thoughts?

Have you ever listened to and acted on advice that seemed wrong at some level and followed the advice anyway?  Why, or what motivated you to do it?

Look at the two ways Hagar was described.  Verse 3 and Verse 4. What are your thoughts about this?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH: God told Hagar what kind of child Ishmael was going to be. Does God only tell of the positive in our lives?  John 16:33

CHAPTER 17

Fun question – If you could change your first name, what would it be?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH:  God expanded the covenant with Abraham in this chapter which included Abraham having a responsibility within this covenant.

Do we have a responsibility in the covenant He made with us or is totally dependent on Him? Luke 1-68-74 Luke 22:20, Romans 11:27, 2nd Corinthians 3: 6 and 14

Write a prayer to God thanking Him for his covenant with you.

We will explore the covenants of God in later lessons.  This is not an all inclusive look at the covenant.

CHAPTER 18

Abraham had a conversation with God about Sarah having a son in Chapter 17, yet she laughs in this chapter.  Any thoughts about conversations she might have had or didn’t have with Abraham?

Have you judged or made a negative comment about Sarah laughing?  What absolute truth did you use?

What impression(s) do you have about the conversation between God and Abraham?

Refer back to chapter 15.  What was the foundational truth about righteousness?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH: 1st Corinthians 1:30 Romans 10:4,

Did Jesus’ death and resurrection automatically save all humanity?

Here are some New Testament verses to help you.  Romans 1:17, 3:22, Romans 4:3, Romans 5:17-18, Romans 10:10

Paraphrase what these verses reflect.

CHAPTERS 7 – 12

Genesis chapter 7 – 12

These questions are written with the idea that it helps you ask questions while reading, which is my prayer for you.  We will also continue to have “Real Talk” with God.

Chapter 7

Think about family members who do not believe God. Would you do all you could, to bring them to safety?

Have you been in a situation similar to Noah where you had to abandon your immediate family (Mom, Dad, grandchild, nephew, niece, etc..) for God?

Why do you think God inspired the writer to add that the waters rose 20 feet above the mountains?

Is there something new in this chapter you have never noticed before or a question that you pondered about this chapter in which there is no immediate answer?

Chapter 8

Look back to chapter 5 and find what Noah’s name meant.

Do you think Lamech envisioned what was to happen to mankind? Why or why not?

What did you envision in your life and what became reality?

Chapter 9

What were you expected to do as a child, teenager and/or young adult?

Write your definition of CURSED.

We are called to be a servant.  Is it the same type of servant Canaan was told he would be?  Why or why not?

After reading this chapter did you have more questions than answers? Write down those questions.

Chapter 10

Who is the relative to whom you are most proud to be related?  Why?

Nimrod was “…a mighty hunter before the Lord.”  In what area of your life do you see yourself as mighty before the Lord?

Write a prayer to God thanking Him for making you mighty in an area of your life or asking Him to show you how you are mighty before Him.  Again, this is having real talk with God.

Chapter 11

Have you had an ambition for your life which could not be accomplished without help? Was there a person in your life who was against it?

Have you had a time in your life where it felt like God caused a Babel?

God has the writer break down Shem’s descendants into ages.  We do not see that for the other sons of Noah.  Why do think it was important to do this for Shem and his family?

Chapter 12

Where is home?

Define the word BLESSED.

Think back to a time you did not trust God. Did you repent or did you choose to ignore your action? Allow the Spirit to reveal your heart, before you answer this question.

Write a prayer thanking Him for His faithfulness in the midst of your unbelief.

Genesis 1-6

GENESIS chapters 1 – 6

Chapter 1 –

What was the most important element / thing / part of creation?  Why?

Outside of your relationship with God, what part of creation brings the most joy to you?   Why?

I am presuming that your relationship with God is the most enjoyable.  If it is not, have a conversation with God asking Him to give you joy in your relationship.  Only you and God will know about this conversation.   It is important that you start this Bible study in complete honesty with God.   Psalm 51:12 reveals the Psalmist asking God to restore the joy of salvation.  You are not alone, if in this is the season of your life, there is no joy.  But I do believe you have to ask for it.

Chapter 2 –

How do you define a Sabbath day?

Do you have a Sabbath set apart for God?

If you do have a day, you set apart for God, how do you explain it to someone who may ask you?

What was most important in this chapter?  Why?

Chapter 3 –

How do you try to hide?  Think about this.  It will take the Spirit to reveal it to you.

Is it healthy to have secrets? Why or why not?

What secrets do you keep? (A secret is different than a surprise. You may be planning a surprise party, and one day everyone will know about it. I am asking about something you do not want anyone to know about, regardless of the reason) I will encourage to write this on a separate piece of paper. I don’t want you to skip this question. You may not want to write it for fear someone else may read it. But your honesty with God about this secret is important for your real talk with God.

Write a prayer to God about your walk with Him.  It doesn’t have to be an expose’.  A few sentences or a paragraph.  This is a good exercise to help you develop real talk with God.

Chapter 4 –

Do you think Abel was more favored than Cain by Adam and/or Eve?  Why or why not?

Did Cain kill as a spur of the moment decision?  Explain your reason.

Chapter 5 –

If you could ask a question to a relative who lived 200 years ago; What would you ask them? Think about the era, and society which would have existed at the time.

Lamech came to the conclusion that his revenge is seventy-seven fold.  Why do you think he came to this conclusion?

How do you come to conclusions?

Chapter 6 –

Did Noah have a good relationship with his sons?  Why or why not?

What thought of your heart is evil or has been evil?  Let the Spirit reveal this to you.  Please don’t move past this question.  Honesty with God will bring a better understanding of yourself with Him.

Exploring the Word in 2023

As we go through the Bible reading with Pastor Danny, we will explore the Word of God together. There will be questions for you to explore YOUR thoughts. There will be no correct answers to these questions. I am not a “fill in the blank” person for knowledge. I do not think there are “pat” answers. Life does not allow for these types of responses. The journey you have with God is as an individual, working together with the Church of believers, to accomplish the work of the ministry which God has given to you. This Bible Study will be for you to evaluate your thoughts, behaviors, and actions based on the reading of the scripture. One of my favorite quotes is “The Bible was never meant to be reduced to mere study nor insulted by dissection. The Bible is living and designed to be lived.” (author unknown) I pray you are excited to explore God’s word together.

I will be posting the questions for each week’s reading on this page and will have printed copies of them at the church. Look here for the questions on Friday or Saturday for the following week’s reading. For example, we are reading the first six chapters of Genesis the week of January 1st – January 7th. The questions will be for Genesis chapters 1 through 6. Because there is no workbook, you may want to get a three ring binder with lined paper. The daily question page may not have space for your answers, prayers and thoughts.
