How has your experience been when receiving advise from a non-blood family member?

Do you receive advise with the same enthusiasm as from a blood relative?

Chapter 19

Verse 8- “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.”  Think about their recent past, has then been true?

As believers we want to think this is true in our lives.  Here is a short list of things we know God has said.  How are you doing in the obedience level? Please look up and the read the verses.  Allow the Holy Spirit speak to you.

Forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32)–

Seeing everyone as more important than you ( Philippians 2:3) –

Love the unlovely (Matthew 6:44) –

Gossip (Proverbs 20:19) (sharing information you have not asked permission to share)-

Being joyful in trials (James 1:2)

Willing to suffer in the flesh (1st Peter 4:1)-

Your will and work is for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13)-

Obey Christ in your thoughts (2nd Corinthians 10:5)-

Self-control (frivolous spending, over-eating, procrastination, activities before responsibility, procrastination…just to name a few) (1st Corinthians 7:5, Galatians 5:23, Matthew 6:21)

FROM THE PASTOR:
God wants me to overcome my flesh, die to my fleshly desires:
Rom 8:7-8 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 13:14  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Gal 5:16-17  But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
1 Peter 2:11  Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
1 John 2:16-17  For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

I have committed to God several times with all my heart that I have died to my flesh(self), only to realize I have sinned again by giving in to self and my selfish desires including; pride, lust and fantasies .

Rewrite a verse which speaks to your disobedience.  Then write a prayer and have a conversation with God about it.  Your area of disobedience may not be in this list. Use the area of your biggest struggle in which the Holy Spirit wants your heart.

Chapter 20

Verses 2-17 – Use one or more of the verses and rewrite it using only the personal pronoun.   For example, verse 3: God You have told me I cannot put my quilting, my family, my activities or my pleasure as an excuse or reason to keep from spending time with You.

Verse 19 – Why do you think the children of Israel thought they would die if God spoke to them?

PAST LESSONS – An altar is built for God (Genesis 8:20).  A pillar is an outward sign or object when God has met with you (Genesis 28:18). An oath is from an inward pledge or vow (Genesis 28:28).

Verse 25-26 – God was specific on how to build His altar.  How could you profane an altar in your life?

Chapter 21

Verses 2-11 – How has God entrusted you with people in your life?

Are you using Biblical truths when you have interactions with them?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – verse 6: An ear pierced slave gave up his/her freedom or rights.  Slaves were only given the rights God had outlined for the masters.

We should be ear-pierced slaves for God.  Have you given up your right to yourself? A few examples:

To be wronged and not try to make it right – Romans 12:19-20

To not rebel against authority – 1st Peter 2:13-15

Putting yourself before others- Philippians 2:3-4

How do you process 21:12-14?

This chapter deals with personal and property injury.  How do you see our system of justice being different if this was instituted?

How do these laws within this chapter relate to the Sovereignty of God?

How do you relate these laws within this chapter to our community?

How are grace, mercy and love applied in this chapter?

grace –

Who have you had to learn to trust?

Chapter 13

Verse 9 – Read Revelation 13:16-17 ; The beast who is sent to destroy uses the same symbol as God uses in Exodus 13:9.  They are very different.  In Exodus the law of the Lord is to be in your mouth. In Revelation 13:16 it will allow you to buy or sell. Which one is more important to you? Why?  Find at least one Bible verse to back up your answer. (Google)

Verses 17 and 18 – What character of God do you see in these 2 verses?  There is no wrong answer.

Chapter 16

Start a list with 2 columns.  On one side write the complaints or sin of the Israelites, in the opposite column write what God did or how He responded.  Do this throughout the book of Exodus. Here are some verses to get you started.  14:12, 15:24, 16:3.  The list will get long.  We have 40 years.  Every time you write about the children of Israel think about times you have said or done the same thing.

Verse 3 – When have you forgotten that the Lord provided in your life?  For example: “Gosh I hate the mud.” This would be a response when you forgot you asked God to provide moisture.

Chapter 5

Verses 1-5 – What is your view of Pharaoh through these first few verses?

Verses 15 – 20 – Have you ever blamed someone for what you now realize was God’s purpose?

Chapter 6

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – God was known as God Almighty, but would make His name known as LORD.  According to Strong’s Concordance shadday is the Hebrew word for almighty, meaning most powerful. yhovah is the Hebrew word for Lord, which is Jehovah, meaning “the existing One”

Do you most identify with God Almighty or Lord in your life?

How has that name been realized in your life?

Verse 9 – Who in your life does not listen when you speak about God?

Verse 30 – Have you believed you were not enough for the task God gave you?

2nd Peter 1:3 speaks to this.  Rewrite this verse to personalize it.  For example, I will rewrite Isaiah 26:3 – God, thank you for keeping me in peace and calmness when I keep my thoughts focused on you.  I trust you.

Chapter 7

Verse 2 – Define the word prophet.

Is verse 3 about God or Pharaoh?  Why?

Chapter 8

Verses 8 – 10: Have you ever said “if it isn’t better tomorrow I will___________?

Has anyone asked you to “entreat” God for them after something negative has happened in their life?

In verse 28, do you view the prophecy to each son as a blessing? Why or why not?

Chapter 50
We don’t read about Israel/Jacob having interactions with the Egyptian people.  Yet there was great mourning for him.  Do you think it was because of Joseph?  Why or why not?

In verse 15, the brothers made a wrong decision based on what they thought about Joseph.  At times, do you make decisions on what you believed was the thoughts of someone?

In Genesis 45:8 and again here in verse 20, Joseph is reassuring his brother of truth.  When have you had to be reminded of truth?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – in verses 24 & 25, Joseph is looking towards a hope for his body to be taken with the children of Israel, when they leave Egypt. We have hope greater than that.  According to these verses (and more), what is our hope? Romans 15:12-13, 1st Peter 1:13, 20-21, 1st John 3:1-3.

EXODUS 1

Verse 17 – What does it mean to fear God?

Chapter 2

Moses came from Levi.  What prophesy from Genesis chapter 49, do you see that Moses exhibits in this chapter?

Verses 24-25 can be difficult verses to understand.  Use Genesis 15:13-15 to help you interpret these verses.   Here are some other verses which may help you.  Revelation 18:5, Revelation 16:19, Genesis 8:1, Numbers 10:9, Isaiah 49:15-16, Genesis 19:29, Genesis 30:22.  Acts 10:31 Psalm 98:3.   Write your thoughts.

Write a prayer to God thanking Him for who He is in your life today.

If you only had this chapter in the Bible, what would be your perspective of God, Moses and the children of Israel?

Chapter 4
No indication that Moses has had a previous conversation with God.  What is the first conversation you remember having with God?

Using verses 3 – 9 & 23 – Write a list of what God is going to use to convince the Egyptians to let His people leave Egypt? example – staff to snake,

What is the typical conversation you have with God, about the things He asks you to do?

When do you worship?

What encourages you to worship?

FROM THE PASTOR – What character(s) of God do you see?

How have you seen them in your life or in the lives of those you know?

CHAPTERS 43 – 48

This week the format has been changed a bit.  Hang on!  Read chapters 43 – 45 and remember what you read in chapter 42 or go back and read it as well.

The brothers have to go back to Jacob/Israel and explain that Joseph is alive.  Remember, Benjamin probably does not know about the secret. They are probably having this discussion in secret…, again.

Scenario – You are one of the brothers.  The brothers decide to make up a plausible story, of how they found his tunic covered with blood, and yet Joseph is alive.

Is your thought – no big deal, I have been hiding secrets for years?

Scenario – You are one of the brothers.  You tell them you are going to go along with their story, but in your head, you decide to finally reveal your secret, to your father.

When contemplating how to tell your father, would you start by reminding your father of some of the stories you have heard through the years, of his interactions with Laban?

Would you tell him, only of the role, you played in the deception?

Would you tell him the full truth, regardless of the consequences?

Now, imagine you are Jacob/Israel.  What would your initial reaction/emotion be, concerning the deception/secret?

Chapter 44

Like Joseph, have you been so overwhelmed with long term emotion, that you could not control it?

Joseph deceived his brothers in chapter 44.  What do you imagine the motive was?

Do you think Joseph would have made Benjamin a slave? Why or why not?

What long term character have you seen in one of your relatives?

Chapter 45

46:34 – What is loathsome, disgusting, or an abomination to you?  Would you do anything, in your power, to keep it from touching your life?

Chapter 47

We do not know how Jacob blessed Pharaoh.  How would you bless someone, you have met for the first time?

God insured Israel got the best of the land.  What has God given you, that you would define as, the best of the land?

Chapter 48

Do you believe that Jacob had the right to claim Joseph’s sons as his? Why or why not?

1st Peter 3:17-18 – Is this applicable to the story of Joseph?  Why or why not?

Why do you think Joseph’s dreams, angered his brothers?

What do you think was behind the desire to kill Joseph?

We don’t know the conversation Joseph was having with his brothers, when they were throwing him in the pit.  What conversation would you be having?

How do these verses fit in your life just now?

Have you seen where someone was blessed because of another person? (verse 5)

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH – Joseph’s sin would have been against God, not Potiphar or his wife. Psalm 51:3-4, Psalms 41:4, 2nd Samuel 12:13

39:14-18 – In your own words, what was the evil? Put a name to it.

What is the conversation you are having with God for your release?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH- Interpretations belong to God (verse 8)  1st Corinthians 12:10, 2nd Peter 1:20-21

FROM THE PASTOR – What Character(s) of God did you see? How have you seen this/these in your life or in the life of someone close to you?

CHAPTERS 31-36

CHAPTER 31

If you could advise Jacob, what would you tell him to do about relationship to Laban?  Remember, only use an absolute truth as discernment, not as a religious judgement.

The Deception Continues !!!!

God told Jacob to leave.  Was he obligated to tell Laban he was leaving?  Why or why not?

What did Rachel do, to show she had become like her father?

Do you think Rachel and Leah would have agreed to leave if their father was still rich?  Why or why not? (Verses 14-16)

In this chapter, how is God, “the God who sees”?  Write the verse(s) you used.

What is your definition of the word “VOW”?

Do you think God caused Jacob to prosper because of the vow? Explain your thinking, there is no concrete answer.

Based on Genesis 28:22, how much of Jacob’s wealth was not touchable by Laban?

CHAPTER 32

In verse 33:10-11, What did Jacob say was his reason?

Compare 32:7 & 13 and 33:10-11 – what conclusion do you have?

Let’s remember that an alter is built to or for God.  There are several reasons Jacob could have decided to build an altar to God.  After reading these few chapters, what are some of those reasons.

CHAPTER 34

The deceptions continue!!!

What or who is your family’s pride and joy?

What was or is one unbearable loss you had or dread?

Define anger in verse 7 and deceit in verse 11 according to what happened in this chapter.

What was the truth which was spoken in verses 13 – 18?

How did Hamor and Shechem convince the men to be circumcised according to verse 23?

In your selfishness have you ever convinced someone to do something?

Matthew 5:44 Jesus tells you what your responsibility is concerning enemies.  Write a conversation to God, thanking him for the peace He can and does give you, when you obey this?

This chapter could have a lot of emotion attached to it for you.  Write a conversation to God about your thoughts.  Ask Him to give you what you need to have peace either in your “good for them” or “how could he” emotion.  This could be a secret place for you, which you have never allowed to come to the surface.   If so, it is destructive for you to keep it in the secret place.

CHAPTER 35

In your life, when have you lingered at Shechem (a place to prosper and be religious) instead of going to Bethel ( your designated “house of God”)?

What is your Bethel?  Write it down.  Give it a name.  Have a conversation with God about it.  This is important to your spiritual health.

It appears Jacob knew there were people with him who had foreign gods.  Do you think it was Jacob’s responsibility to rid them before now?  Why or why not?

Why do you think Jacob hid the gods and jewelry instead of destroying them?

We do not see Jacob fearing the people of Canaan.  Why do you think he did not fear?

El Bethel – The God, of the house of God. The God! Of the House of God!  How do these two different expressions take on meaning in your life? (Verse7)

Reuben in essence slept with a step mother.  Yet there is no mention other than Israel (Jacob) heard about it.  Any thoughts on the lack of any conversations or outcome?

Write the names of the son’s of Jacob (Israel) in your notebook.  Write them in a way you can add to them.  For example:

Reuben –  first born, slept with fathers concubine, etc….

Simeon – Leah’s son, defended Dinah his sister, etc..

Levi – Leah’s son, defended Dinah, etc…

So on and so forth.  These men make up the whole of Israel.  They are important.  But it is important to remember their lives as people like us.

CHAPTER 36

In your family, how far back have you gone?

It was important to God to have Esau’s generations mentioned. Why do you think God did this, in light of Jacob getting the blessing, and not Esau?

What are your thoughts concerning the use of the chief throughout this genealogy?

OVERVIEW of Genesis 19 – 24

In verse 6 of chapter 20, God kept Sarah safe. He kept Abimelech from sinning and He is able to keep us from sinning according to 1st Corinthians 10:13.

Even though Abraham told Sarah to tell Abimelech, she was a sister, she could have told the full truth on her way to Abimelech’s home. The opportunity we are given to escape temptation, will probably not be easy.

Abimelech was told to have Abraham pray for him. How humbling for Abraham, facing Abimelech, knowing he lied to him. How disturbing it must have been for Abimelech, to go to the person who sinned against him, and ask for prayer of healing. Isn’t God great!!!

In chapter 21 Ishmael was a child, and his laugh was one of mockery and jesting. This confirms the truth which God spoke to Noah in Genesis 8:21. “the intent of mans heart is evil from childhood”.

God never gave Abraham permission to have another son or wife. Sarai gave and Abraham took 16:4.  God separated Ishmael from the inheritance in 16:12.  God’s promise was between Abraham and Sarah.  Not Abraham and his wife’s Egyptian servant. 17:15-16

Just as Abraham trusted God, with Isaac, the very basic thing we should be trusting God for, is eternal life.   1st John 5:11

In chapter 24 the servant of Abraham, Asked God and then Praised God. We are not given the servants name. This should be our attitude as servants of God. We should not care if anyone knows our name, only that we asked God and praised God.

The conversation between Laban and the servant is important because it is what the servant was told to tell. We are servants who are told to spread the gospel in Mark 16:15, Acts 10:42 and Matthew 28:19-20.

There are lots of nuggets of truth we could and should glean from these chapters.  I hope as we move into our study that you start asking God to give you truths.  Not what I say to you, but what God wants you to know for your life.  We do not receive, because we do not ask.

CHAPTERS 25-30

APPLICATION – Where have you seen the character(s) to be true in you life? Write an example.

OVERVIEW of Genesis 13 – 19

As we looked at these chapters, we see Lot take what looks like the best, regardless of it being full of wickedness.  Sometimes we are thrust into places like wickedness, as was the case when Andy was sent to jail, and then to prison.  It is a place of overwhelming wickedness.  Then there are times we choose to go to places of wickedness, such as a party.  Regardless of how you end up in a place of wickedness we are called to be light.   We will be left standing alone like Lot when we are in places of wickedness.

In verse 18 -Altars are very important. We will read about them often.   It marks a place where we met God.  Meeting God is not some mysterious thing.  It is where you saw God answer prayer, where you had a conversation with God and He gave you peace. A situation where you know He was protecting you.  We tend to dismiss these as soon as they happen, by building an altar we remember it.  I can’t encourage you enough to get a small notebook, to build an altar using words, and giving it a name.

We looked at the few scriptures about Melchizedek.   We know little about this priest, and yet the important role of this priest, is who he represented.   Psalms 110:4 tells us that that Jesus will be an eternal priesthood after the order of Melchizedek.  Sometimes we are told very little about an individual or situation, yet the importance can be about God’s kingdom purpose.

God’s covenant with us, is foundational to how we walk in truth.  Jesus is the new covenant in His blood.  It doesn’t matter if anyone accepts it or not. It was a covenant like the one God made with Abraham.  It has nothing to do with what we do or we don’t do.

In verse 3- Sarai gave Hagar as a wife to Abram.  No indication that Abram consulted God.  We do not read where God ever considered Hagar a wife of Abram or Abraham.  In verse 9 this is the response of the angel of the Lord “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority”.  Not to Abraham your husband.

In verse 4- Hagar’s attitude had a lot to do with Sarai’s response.  Hagar was not gracious.  In our lives do we see the result of when we were harsh instead of gracious.

God expanded the covenant, which gave responsibility to man. We are given responsibility as believers in the new covenant.  Abraham could have rejected what God told him, and it would not have revoked God’s promise, anymore than when we choose to walk outside of what God has asked us to do.  The covenant is in Jesus’ blood is not in our obedience to His blood.

Concerning Sodom and Gomorrah, it was about righteousness not so much about the wickedness.  Abraham pleaded for righteousness, not the good or less evil.  In Matthew 6:33 we are told to pursue righteousness.  That is one of the responsibilities we are given.

IN THESE CHAPTERS – we see Abram/Abraham and Sarai/Sarah as human.  Sometimes Godly, sometimes not so much.  Abram was not to have Lot with him and it caused him grief.  Abrahams caring heart for Lot and his father overrode what God had told Abraham.  Abraham wanted a son and went outside of the marriage to do so.  Abraham took no responsibility in how Hagar despised his wife.  Sarah blamed her husband for giving a son to Hagar.  Abraham did not consult God before taking Hagar as a wife then complicated matters by letting Hagar disrespect Sarai.

Regardless what we can see as wrong in these passages, what we do know is that we are like them in many ways.  We know what God wants us to do, but our own sympathies get in the way.  We want something and will twist the truth to get it.  We fail to hold someone responsible for disrespect.  We make a wrong decision and want to try to blame it on someone else.  Yet God continues with us, just like he did with them.  The two words we should use in our vocabulary is “only God”.  Only God can take the mess we make in our lives, and complete His purpose.
