When God Makes Himself Known

1 Samuel 3-8

Passage

As a young boy, Samuel had his first encounter with God, but did not understand at first. Once Eli realized what was happening, he instructed Samuel. Samuel responded to God’s call by listening intently. Afterward he did not make a big show by boasting or did not condemn Eli by confronting him with God’s vision. He humbly presented what God had revealed about Eli with respect for Eli’s position, and with concern for what was going to happen. This obedience to God and humble attitude demonstrated his selection as a prophet of God, and the people of Israel recognized him in this position as well.

Samuel mentions that the word of the Lord was rare in those days. Looking at the way the people behaved, probably gives us a clue for the reason. They looked at God as a provider and deliverer. One who is there for times of trouble to get us out of what we have done to ourselves. Like many of us today, they liked to keep God handy for those times we need Him, but still want to follow our own ideas. The story of the battle with the Philistines shows this mentality from both Israel and Philistine people. They liked to worship God and considered His power but did not want to obey Him as their King.
